Fundamentals

AWS fundamentals include architecture principles, adoption strategy, migration patterns, and core services.

Well-Architected Framework

Top priority pillars:

  1. Security
  2. Reliability
  3. Cost optimization

Additional pillars:

  1. Sustainability
  2. Performance efficiency
  3. Operational excellence

Cloud Adoption Framework

The AWS Cloud Adoption Framework helps organizations design and implement a cloud migration strategy.

Six perspectives:

  • business
  • people
  • governance
  • platform
  • security
  • operations

Migration Strategies

The 7 Rs:

  1. Rehost: lift and shift
  2. Replatform: lift, tinker, and shift
  3. Refactor or re-architect
  4. Repurchase: move to SaaS
  5. Retire
  6. Retain
  7. Relocate

Migration Services

  • AWS Database Migration Service
  • AWS Snowball
  • AWS Application Migration Service

AWS EC2 is often the first practical AWS compute service to learn.

EC2

EC2, or Elastic Compute Cloud, provides scalable virtual servers in AWS.

Launch Instance

Basic steps:

  1. Open the AWS Management Console.
  2. Search for EC2.
  3. Click Instances.
  4. Click Launch Instance.
  5. Choose AMI, instance type, key pair, network settings, security group, and storage.

Common Instance Types

  • t2.micro: free tier eligible, 1 vCPU, 1GB RAM
  • t2.small: general purpose, 1 vCPU, 2GB RAM
  • t3.medium: general purpose, 2 vCPU, 4GB RAM

Security Group

Common inbound rules:

SSH 22 your IP only
HTTP 80 0.0.0.0/0
HTTPS 443 0.0.0.0/0

Use the narrowest access that still works.

Connect With SSH

chmod 400 path/to/your-key.pem
ssh -i "path/to/your-key.pem" ec2-user@your-public-ip

AMI usernames:

  • Amazon Linux: ec2-user
  • Ubuntu: ubuntu
  • Debian: admin

This connects to SSH because EC2 access usually depends on SSH key permissions and network rules.

Stop When Done

AWS charges by usage. Stop instances when they are not in use. Terminate only when you want to delete the instance permanently.
