Explaining Renesas smart meter chips and reference designs.
A smart meter is an electricity meter that digitally measures how much energy a home or building uses (voltage, current, power, kWh) and sends that data to the utility automatically, instead of someone reading a dial.
Renesas makes chips designed for building these meters, and the RA2A2 is one of them. That’s what I meant by calling it a metering chip. Renesas even publishes a 3-phase smart electric meter reference design for heavy industrial and high electricity-consuming homes built around the RA2A2. cnx-software
Why this matters for your AFCI work
A meter needs to measure the 50/60 Hz waveform and its low-order harmonics very precisely, but it doesn’t need to see fast events. So the chip is built for:
- High precision, low speed. The 24-bit ADC is extremely accurate, but it only samples at about 8 kHz. That’s plenty for billing-grade energy measurement.
- Very low power and long life. Features like the independent RTC, segment LCD driver, and dual-bank flash for firmware updates are typical meter needs.
Arc detection is the opposite. You care less about precision and more about catching fast, high-frequency noise. That’s why your EK-RA2A2 is a good board for learning the workflow (data capture, feature extraction, a small model running on an MCU), but it isn’t the chip a production AFCI would normally use without extra analog circuitry in front of it.
